There are many reasons we may have a hard time decluttering and organizing. Life can be busy with work, school, illness, after school activity, trips, and so on. Having such a busy schedule leaves little time to take care of our homes. And the stress we can feel from some of these activities can make it hard to have the motivation to deal with the thought prosses involved in making decisions for decluttering and organizing.

Living in chaos thou, makes the situation even wors for us. We can experience:

  • Wasted time in searching for things and running back and forth throw the house.

  • Feeling closed in from having so many belongings.

It can help to think of our home as a container. It is there to contain you, your family, and your ability to run your life. If the home is over full of belongings, than it is no longer properly acting as a container. Have you heard the illustration to demonstrate how to have time for the important things you need to fit in your schedule? You have a jar that represent your time. Time is a container. Then several large rocks that represent the things you have to get done, (work, sleep, etc.) Plus, a bunch of small pebbles that represent the things you want to do like (go on vacation, go to the beach, etc.) If you put the small pebbles in first than the larger rocks, not all of them will fit. But if you put the larger ones first then the pebbles, than they will fit. So, to with our homes. It works if we fit the necessities into our home. What you need to accomplish the necessary things in life. Then we will see what space we have left to put non-essential items comfortably.

What to keep

How do you determined what to keep when decluttering and organizing to simplify your surroundings?

  1. It is good to take a few mints to sit down and determined what you do with your time. Make a list and categorize everything into two categories:

What is necessary to take care of your family and home?

What are the fun things to do (classes, beach days, etc.)?

  1. Now gather a bunch of items around a comfortable place to sit. Along with some boxes. One box for items you are keeping, that you can carry around the house to put the items where they belong. One box for donation items. And one box for a maybe pile. You may come across items that you don't love but you think you need for some reason. Then if you find you have more than one, try keeping the best one. Or you may find you just don't want it after all when you see how many things you are keeping.

  2. As you go through the items, ask:

Is this necessary for accomplishing the required things I must get done?

If it is something for enjoyment, how much use do we get out of it anymore?

If it is decoration, how many decorations do I have? Is it truly special to me?

To summarize

So, when life becomes busy and stressful and our environment is chaotic, to declutter, organize and simplify, take a few mints to list what occupies your time. Then fined a comfortable place to sit with your belongings around you, ask yourself some important questions and find some organization to your world.
